2008 Leader Playbooks Won’t Work in 2011
Everybody’s wondering if we’re headed for a recessionary double-dip or a slowdown that seems like one. So should leaders get out their 2008 playbooks and prepare to execute those plays all over again? Absolutely not. In his Fortune blog, Geoff Colvin warns that no matter where the economy is heading, leaders need to understand that 2011 is very different from 2008. For example:
- consumer behavior has reversed
- capital is easier to acquire
- layoffs may no longer be necessary
Using a 2008 playbook to execute in 2011 will be a losing strategy because “every crises is a new reality. The winners in this one will be those leaders who understand it fastest and best.”
