Building success in talent development – one thought at a time.
Going off-grid
“Life is either a daring adventure or nothing at all.”
Helen Keller
To our U.S. friends, we hope this finds you basking in the glow of a long weekend and a shorter work week following the annual celebration of our country’s founding. (And to our non-U.S. friends, we hope you enjoyed a nice weekend!)
We had a good time watching fireworks over a nearby lake, catching up with family and friends, and sampling a bountiful spread of community comfort food that for some reason always tastes so much better when prepared by others and enjoyed outdoors. Our holiday was also tempered of course by the shock of yesterday’s tragedy in Chicago.
This morning we heard about a colleague’s 25-mile, 6-hour horseback ride into a camp unreachable by road at Yellowstone, where he and family and friends enjoyed fishing, camping, and not surprising any bears at what’s been called the most remote location in the lower 48 states. One of the best parts of that trip, he said, apart from crossing the Continental Divide, was being completely off the grid (although a guide did have text access in case of an emergency).
When was the last time you went off-grid? In our super-connected, always-on, remote-work-via-wifi world, it’s all too easy to find ourselves checking in, even just for a few minutes or more often longer. Our good intentions to disconnect fall victim to our habits, the needs of others, and our own curiosity.
In reality, going off-grid is a decision we can make at any time. We don’t have to travel far to do it. We just have to make a commitment.
Our wish for you this summer is that you find the time and the will to disconnect, enjoy nature, and breathe in the beauty of a day, an hour, or even a moment, undisturbed.
