Talent Development Tuesday - Nothing but net (basketball swooshing toward the goal)

Nothing but net

“Shooting percentage is just as much about decision-making as it is about technique.”
Jeff Van Gundy, Former NBA coach, commentator

As the NBA finals get under way this week, Brent Snow and Sean Murray, our thought leader partners at 10,000 Feet, have produced an insightful blog post especially for us about the adoption of the 3-point shot as a cautionary tale for leaders navigating disruptive innovation.

While on one level, it’s about basketball, it is also about how any type of organization may be slow to recognize and take advantage of changes and disruptive innovations in their world.

Why were coaches, players, and managers so slow to adopt the 3-point shot? The answer, they suggest, can help us as leaders make better decisions.

The 3-point shot changed the dynamics of basketball and created the possibility for new strategies and new paths to success. Creating competitive advantage after a disruptive innovation requires superior decision-making skills and an awareness of the decision traps that could slow adoption, as we will see with the 3-point shot.

There were 5 decision traps, specifically, that stood in the way. Could these same traps be preventing you from turning a disruptive innovation in your industry into a competitive advantage?

Decision-making is a skill that can be taught. If your leaders need to make high-quality decisions in challenging circumstances, talk to us about our popular Decision Mojo™ learning experience. Contact us or talk to your Advantage partner for ideas or support. We’re here to help!
