Talent Development Tuesday
Building success in talent development – one thought at a time.
Into the limelight
“A leader will find it difficult to articulate a coherent vision unless it expresses his core values, his basic identity … One must first embark on the formidable journey of self-discovery in order to create a vision with authentic soul.”
– Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi
When he took the position 11 years ago, our President & CEO Jonathan Hodge asked Shirley Dahl, client services manager based in our home office in California, what had happened to a framed print of our core values that used to be a centerpiece on the wall in the office.
“She didn’t utter a word,” he said in a recent companywide email, “but, instead, walked into her office, shimmied her desk away from the wall, and pulled out the framed print” that had been in storage.
In taking the helm, Hodge committed to bringing our organization’s core values back into the limelight. And in telling that story, Hodge was asking us to revisit our personal values before an upcoming virtual holiday get-together, which we held yesterday.
“In the spirit of values not being a decoration on the wall or a ‘one-and-done’ part of our culture and operating system, we were offered a gift this year from Richard Hodge and Jeannie Taylor (creators of Manifesting Values) of exploring our values anew and through the lens of what we all value personally to better understand the power of these intersections and the power of what we all bring to the equation,” he wrote.
In the session, we talked about what values matter most to us personally, and how they connect to our core values. We shared ideas with partners and teams about what we’re doing well and where we could do better to live our values every day.
