Ignite + Experience + Strengthen = Results
I don’t cook a lot but when I do I enjoy it. Sometimes I like to try a brand-new recipe and sometimes I rely on the tried and true recipes that have been passed down by generations because you absolutely know it works and everyone loves it.
Early on in my career as a learning and development consultant, I learned one tried and true recipe for driving business results with learning that never goes out of style but can sometimes get lost or forgotten among other responsibilities and distractions.
The recipe looks like this: Ignite + Experience + Strengthen = Results
Ignite ingredients include preparation and readiness which means that learners come into a learning experience with a clear focus on what they are going to learn and intention with how they will apply it on their job to drive results. Learners and their managers need to be included in Ignite.
Experience ingredients include a high quality learning intervention. Programs must engaging, targeted, and delivered in the right format for the learning being developed.
Strengthen ingredients include ensuring the application environment back on the job involves reinforcement and coaching for the new behaviors. Managers play an important role in strengthen.
Many organizations try to streamline the recipe by just using experience alone,i.e. Experience = Results. This does not work and will absolutely waste the investments you make in any of the ingredients.
Research from our thought leader partner and the pioneer of the High Impact Learning® process, Dr. Robert Brinkerhoff, found that when organizations deploy learning in this way, only 15-20 percent of learners will apply their new capabilities in a way that leads to worthwhile results.

Adopting impact map usage in the Supply Chain L&D organization has shifted the quality of communication and increased the focus on performance improvement.
