This article also appears on the Talent Development Think Tank website.

In today's episode of the Talent Development Hot Seat podcast with Andy Storch,  Advantage Performance Group President & CEO Jonathan Hodge shared valuable insights on navigating the ethical landscape of generative AI in the learning and development field.

Here are actionable steps he recommends to ensure ethical AI use in your organization’s L&D processes:

  • Understand the behavior change imperative - Jonathan emphasized that the adoption of AI is not just about digital transformation but involves a profound behavior change. As a leader, engage in AI to understand its impact on your team's workflow and ensure you’re leading by example.
  • Respect intellectual property - Jonathan stressed the importance of not using AI to convey thought leaders’ core models without permission. Prioritize obtaining explicit consent when incorporating theories or models into AI platforms to respect intellectual property.
  • Protect copyrighted materials - Do not upload copyrighted materials into generative AI without permission and a secure environment. Ensure that the data you handle complies with confidentiality agreements and maintains intellectual property integrity.
  • Humanize AI-created content - AI-generated content should serve as a first draft. Human review and revision are crucial to infuse needed voice and authenticity. This approach prevents losses in engagement and maintains the human connection in communication.
  • Leverage AI for insights and creativity - Use AI for gaining insights and sparking creativity, but balance it with human intuition and expertise. Treat AI as an assistant that enhances human capabilities rather than as a replacement.
  • Lead the integration of AI ethically - The best organizations lead AI integration by involving all employees and setting ethical guidelines. Invest in training and resources to empower your team with the skills needed to use AI ethically and effectively.
  • Encourage human collaboration - Collaboration between humans and AI should be the norm. Encourage your team to use AI as an assistant that complements their knowledge, skills, and decision-making processes.

By following these steps and insights, organizations can ethically and effectively integrate AI within their learning and development programs, driving enhanced business performance and individual growth.
