Dr. Hill's concepts are especially relevant today as leaders are forced to rebuild the relationships and ecosystems that have been shut down or vastly changed from the effects of COVID-19.
Conceptualized in part from discussions with MBAs and executives about their missteps and derailers, Dr. Hill's book presents The 3 Imperatives of Leadership as necessary levers leaders must develop to exercise their influence and be successful. They are: Managing Yourself, Managing Your Network, and Managing Your Team.
The learning experience is in development with Advantage Performance Group and 1st90 in partnership with Paradox Strategies and set for release in late October. The full journey includes the mobile app plus interactive virtual sessions and 360-degree feedback to introduce and reinforce learning concepts.
Originally intended for students and new managers, "I did not write this book thinking about CEOs, but it turns out in Silicon Valley, a lot of CEOs read this book. I was sitting with one once and he pulled it out of his backpack," Dr. Hill says, "and clearly it had been used and read a lot. And he looked at it and he said, 'You wrote this book! I keep this in my backpack at all times.' "
And making it even more accessible as a mobile app is exciting, she says:
I've always wanted managers to be able to learn when they needed to, when they wanted it, when they were open to it because my first research depressed me when I learned that people don't learn to lead at school. They don't. They learn to lead at work. So, having tools that they can have access to when they're at work, that to me is what it's all about."
A Harvard Business School professor and faculty chair of its leadership initiative, Dr. Hill and co-author Kent Lineback wrote Being the Boss as a framework for a generation of new leaders facing dramatic technical and global change.
Published in 2011, a new edition of Being the Boss came out in 2019. Dr. Hill authored another book, Collective Genius, in 2014, and gave a popular TEDx Talk the same year that was later chosen as a featured talk by the editors at TED.
Leadership is hard, and it keeps getting harder, she says. In the years since its publication, the book has resonated with diverse audiences around the world as a useful way to clarify what managers must do to execute as well as adapt.
"So it's a very basic, simple framework that's robust enough to capture the kinds of challenges and opportunities that leaders face, and I've been very pleased to see that's it's been well received," Dr. Hill says.
