Talent Development Tuesday
Building success in talent development – one thought at a time.
A timeless lesson
“Leadership is the art of getting someone else to do something you want done because he wants to do it.“
– Dwight D. Eisenhower
Eighty years ago last week, General Dwight Eisenhower faced a critical decision. As Supreme Allied Commander, he had to determine the exact timing for the D-Day invasion.
In a new blog post on our website, our thought leader partners Sean Murray and Brent Snow from 10,000 Feet, reflect on how Eisenhower’s approach—gathering opinions, reflecting deeply, and preparing for all outcomes—provides timeless decision-making lessons.
Leaders today can learn from his methods to enhance their strategic thinking and readiness.
The initial plan for June 5th was thwarted by bad weather, forcing a delay to June 6th. Another adverse weather report on June 4th presented Eisenhower with a monumental choice: proceed with the invasion or delay further, risking exposure and fortified defenses.
In the silence, Eisenhower pondered, then decisively ordered, “okay, let’s go.” His preparation included consulting experts, reflecting in solitude, and accepting full accountability for the outcome. This level of contemplation and responsibility is crucial for leaders facing uncertain situations.
