Opening the door to our post-pandemic life

Who could have expected when the outbreaks of COVID-19 first gained our attention that we would be hunkering down and masking up for so long? Or that, sadly, millions of people would no longer be with us. Or that the working world as we knew it would be so dramatically and, most likely, permanently changed?

We are all witness to a new era, and it feels strange, doesn’t it? Many companies are reducing their real estate footprint, changing their office designs, and making way for the hybrid workplace, where many employees will be sharing desks or working remotely, some from locations nowhere near their employers’ more costly urban hubs.

In a recent article for Chief Learning Officer, Camille Preston says understanding “reverse culture shock” and its effects may be the best way for us to prepare for our post-pandemic life ahead.

She compares what we now face to what she experienced after moving from a small college town in Massachusetts to Nairobi, Kenya, for a year. After a long stay away, coming home feels at once familiar and unfamiliar. Everything, and nothing, is the same.
