Our time is NOW

Job market and population trends are giving rise to a huge moment for talent development that has been decades in the making.

According to a recent New York Times article, more jobs are open, more people are quitting, and for the first time on record, an abundant U.S. working-age population is no longer growing. (The Upshot: Workers Are Gaining Leverage Over Employers Right Before Our Eyes, 06.05.21)

Add to that the pandemic-prompted awakening for greater work-life balance, its undeniable proof-of-concept for remote work, and the call for social justice, greater equity and a living wage especially among service workers and in entry levels.

Bring along the growing number of highly educated college graduates with massive student debt unable to find jobs in their field who are willing and able to learn and adapt, and a growing sense that workers can and should seek more from their employers. Mix in the pace of change and complexity in our knowledge-based economy, and it’s a wonder anyone can keep up.

The result is a seismic shift taking place right now in the labor market and in business that is perhaps unlike any we have seen since the post-industrial rise of labor unions. For those in talent development, it’s both a differentiator for employers seeking workers and an urgent call to action.

Imagine a world where long-term learning and development were priorities for all employers, where loyalty, experience, and longevity were valued more than temporary or short-term gains, and one in which the culture fostered equal opportunities for enrichment that could let loose the potential not just for profit but for everyone to become better, wiser, stronger, and more productive while also doing the best work of their lives.
