The coming storms

The working world as we know it is about to change – even more.

As if we haven’t all been adapting as fast as we could over the past year and a half, global HR research analyst Josh Bersin is warning HR leaders about the coming storms and opportunities on the horizon at summer’s end.

Don’t miss his post and 25-minute podcast on The Calm Before The Storm: How The Pandemic Recovery Will Change Business, in which he describes the winds of change heading our way and ready to erupt into violent storms this fall, including:

  1. The economy – A tightening labor market and constrained supply chains for materials and people
  2. The markets – The stock market, cryptocurrencies, housing, other assets in a chaotic state as assets and values shift
  3. The government – The effect of trillions of dollars being poured into the economy, the most since World War II, and related political unrest and calls for greater equity
  4. Wages and inflation – Job seekers demanding more, employers focusing on their brand and employee experience.
  5. The flattening of organizations – Organizations continuing their pandemic pivot toward hybrid workplaces that are less hierarchical, more networked, and more agile.
  6. Artificial intelligence – AI recruiting, scanning, and pre-qualifying job candidates. AI evolving into a recommendation engine for jobs tied to learning, which is also AI-driven, to fuel the enterprise talent marketplace and match talent to capabilities.
  7. Work and HR technology –  A massive barrage of creator tools, journey development tools, AI-enabled employee-centric tools entering the marketplace.

“These are going to be real. These are going to be big deals for you,” Bersin says in his podcast. “In the middle of it all is the need for HR people to stay up to speed and skill yourselves.” 

And while they will be volatile, the coming storms are good news for HR, Bersin says:  “This is going to be a magnificent time for your career. We’re going to have some amazing opportunities to add value in the economy, to individuals, to society, to our companies, to ourselves, to our families, and so I’m really positive on the new world of hybrid work, and the new world of work tech that we’re going into in the fall.”
