Talent Development Tuesday
Building success in talent development – one thought at a time.
What workers want
“There is no passion to be found playing small – in settling for a life
that is less than the one you are capable of living.”

Julie Winkle Giulioni’s latest Multidimensional Career Research Project data from the first 6 months of 2024 reveals a 13% higher focus on climb and a slight decrease in other career dimensions of competence, confidence, contentment, and choice.
The data is based on the multidimensional career framework she introduced in her award-winning 2022 book Promotions Are SO Yesterday on how career development has changed to meet shifts in priorities among employees – and why managers must approach it differently.
With data from just over 3,500 professionals since January 1, 2024, and 13,000+ voices since 2022, the project shows a rise in participation among women who report greater interest in connection and confidence than in 2023. Men expressed greater increased interest in challenge. Both women and men reported increased interest in climb over last year.
While climb remains the least interesting career dimension, this shift suggests employees may be increasingly eyeing promotions and moves to higher roles. Could it be they feel a climb would help them earn more to combat the effects of inflation? Do they feel a lack of control or job security in their current roles in light of return-to-work mandates or the current employment landscape?
Although the seven other career dimensions remain more interesting for those participating in the research, Julie says, “Still, leaders everywhere need to be asking themselves, ‘“Why are employees more interested in promotions, roles, and moves today than just six months ago, and how will we respond?’ “
